Cecelia’s poem opens with the line, “I met my younger self for coffee at 10:15,” and I decided to write one for myself.
I met my younger self for coffee
I was late
She was also late
She was wearing heels and jeans and make up
I was wearing leggings and a baggy jumper
She ordered an iced caramel coffee with whipped cream and toffee sauce
I ordered a skinny caramel latte
We are both blonde
She has a fresh face but with low confidence
I told her we stopped caring about what others think
She told me she didn’t know what she wanted to do with her life
I told her I work in IT
She rolled her eyes
She dreams of having kids some day
I told her about the boys – they are beautiful
Her eyes filled with joy
I told her it wasn’t going to be easy
She said she wasn’t afraid
She asked if we ever met the one
I told her it was better than she could ever imagine
We sat in silence for a while just taking it all in
I gave her a hug goodbye
She didn’t look back
